Murraya Koenigii (Curry Leaves) The curry leaf tree comes in three different varieties. Regular one grows very tall and is the fastest growing plant amongst three varieties. The leaves look like the ones you buy at the grocery store. Dwarf variety does not grow as tall but the branches spread. Light green Leaves are the same size as the regular variety but it has an aroma of its own. GAMTHI variety is the most fragrant very thick leaf structure but slowest of all the curry trees. They all have one thing in common. They like full sun, very well drained soil which should be on the dry side and they need fertilizer during summer months. Used in cooking, there is nothing like picking fresh curry leaves just the right amount when you need them.

Light:
Full sun to partial sun (south, east or west window).
Temperature:
As a potted plant, maintain indoor temperatures above 40.
Humidity:
It’s preferable to grow them at 50% or higher; however, they can tolerate lower levels with no harm.
Watering:
Bring the soil to visual dryness between waterings. Be consistent in watering, being sure not to bring them to the extremes of being over dry or constantly wet. Growing in a clay pot will help maintain a healthy root system.
Fertilizer:
They are light feeders so a 1/4 tsp./gallon once a month is a general recommendation. When growth actively stops in winter, discontinue feeding. Use a balanced fertilizer, i.e. 15-15-15 or a blooming fertilizer like Pro Gro ‘Grow’ 7-9-5 or Electra 5-10-3.
Pruning:
Plants need little pruning with the exception of plants that get too tall or unshapely. They do take well to pruning when it is needed.
Insects and Disease:
Murraya have few problems with insects. They can have problems with mealybug if infested plants are nearby. They also have problems with root rots especially during the winter months under excessive soil moisture.
Comments: Murraya are great potted plants for bringing fragrance to the container garden. They flower on and off throughout the year. The one problem that they do experience is edema, which appears as swollen lesions on the backsides of the leaves. Under extreme conditions the leaves will turn yellow and fall. Plants will collapse if the condition is not altered. It is caused by extremes in watering as well as surrounding humidity.
